But, our bodies don't use the pyridoxine form of B6 directly. Our bodies use pyridoxine only to manufacture pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P). It's the P5P our bodies really need to break down and use fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, to make red blood cells and antibodies, to help the digestive and nervous systems function, and to maintain healthy skin. But some folks have trouble converting pyridoxine into P5P. Those susceptible to a deficiency include some breast-fed infants, elderly persons on a poor diet, and women on estrogen-containing oral contraceptive pills. B6 has recently been found to benefit the autistic and is thought the P5P form may even provide more benefit. Also, people such as: pregnant and nursing mothers, the elderly, the autistic, and babies at risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). P5P is the only form of B6 that the fetus and newborn baby can use. In premature babies, who are more susceptible than full-term babies to SIDS, the use of the pyridoxine form of B6 can result in irreversible central nervous system damage. And lack of P5P can predispose a surviving premature infant to atherosclerosis in later life. In addition, the fact that B6 benefits some persons with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and not others, we think may well be traced to the person's ability or inability to make P5P from pyridoxine.
Wholesale Nutrition has studied the problem of getting the right amount of the right form of B6 to the right people at the right price. With the help of several B6 experts, we've concluded that we must offer two forms of B6 to the public:
1. The economical form we've offered for over 20 years is the bottle of 700 tablets. Each tablet contains 100 mg of the pyridoxine form of B6. This is the form recommended for the healthy majority who just want a one-a-day B6 supplement.
2. Our new B6 COMPLEX contains the P5P form of B6, and, though it costs about 3.4 times as much per milligram of B6, it may well be the more economical form for persons who feel the pyridoxine form of B6 isn't working as expected. For those requiring very large amounts of B6, the P5P form is also recommended since it also contains other vitamins and magnesium to help the absorption and metabolism of B6 and to help prevent symptoms of B6 overload.
The ingredients of our B6 Complex are:
Vitamin B6 (as P5P) - - - - - 50 mg
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) - - - 50 mg
Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) - - - 10 mg
Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) - 50 mg
Magnesium (as the Oxide) - - - 100 mg
Folic Acid - - - - - - - 100 mcg
The P5P form of B6 is somewhat temperature & humidity sensitive. It should be kept out of the sun, in a cool dry place, but not in the refrigerator. It's best to take our B6 Complex just before breakfast or lunch along with water or juices.
Remember: Our B6 Complex can be a very potent supplement. We suggest you begin with just half a tablet per day, taken right before breakfast or lunch. B6 overdose (3 tablets, or 300 mg per day, over a long period) can affect the nervous system and result in numbness or tingling in the extremities.
