Sodium ascorbate is a type of vitamin C that has been bound to sodium, a mineral salt. The basic properties and health benefits of sodium ascorbate are the same as vitamin C, but the mineral salt works as a buffer lowering the acidity of ascorbic acid. Binding ascorbic acid to a mineral salt such as sodium makes it potentially easier on the digestive tract because the salt acts as a buffer. Consuming vitamin C as sodium ascorbate is therefore recommended for people who have gastrointestinal problems, according to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University.

The sodium content of sodium ascorbate (131 mg per gram of C) may be objectionable to those with hypertension or water retention problems. Interestingly, sodium ascorbate is used in intravenous drips where dozens of grams/day of sodium don't seem to be a problem. Recent research indicates that only sodium chloride (table salt) may be the culprit. Sodium is a necessary ingredient for the body and a sodium-free diet is not recommended. Sodium ascorbate can be added to many foods such as milk and soup without affecting taste. It's also used as a sugar-free, additive- free, substitute for toothpaste (brush and swallow) for double use of your sodium ascorbate powder (never use ascorbic ACID on teeth). Since sodium ascorbate is usually used for vitamin C megadoses, we don't offer a tablet form since a large excipient intake would result.

I have been using this product for 30 years now and have no complaints. I use 4000 mg. per day. I'm still alive so it must be pretty good!

Great Option for Your War Chest

This Vitamin C is buffered with Sodium, so it's easy to take massive amounts when sick. Plain ascorbic acid can be too acidic to take so much, and some other minerals can overload your system more easily. Additionally, this product is very fine and dissolves quickly in water, which is a big help when you're in a hurry or you're sick and don't want to bother waiting for something else to dissolve. Additionally, this product is fully reacted, which makes it more flexible than using ascorbic acid with baking soda. For instance, you can in some ways replace table salt with this product; it's fairly good on popcorn and can be added to other types of food.
